I know that when you first set out to create your baby registry it can be tough to know what things you will actually need for your upcoming babe. I looked at tons of different places to register, scoured Pinterest to find list after list of things to register for, and read tons of reviews to find the best products for my baby.
Now that the dust has finally settled, I can look back and see what has been the best investment for us. These items are things that we use at least every other day and some of them way more than that. As a new mom, I might have over did my registry, but you don’t have to. After you cover the essentials (diapers, clothes, bed) there is not a whole lot more a baby needs.
Check out this list and see if there is anything you may need to put on order before your new baby gets here! (The last one my surprise you!)
Baby Gym : Our little guy spends some much time playing in his baby gym. Seriously, I don’t know I would do without it. When we go places, I have to borrow people’s draping decorations to hang above him to keep him occupied. That can’t last a whole lot longer though since I highly doubt my grandma wants her drooping flower crushed by the baby who just found out he has hands.
Swing : Even when it is not swinging, this thing is gold. As I write this my baby is sleeping in the swing – not moving. He loves to watch the mobile. That mobile might be one of the things in life that brings him the greatest joy outside of eating and bath time.
Bath Sponge : I love this bath sponge. So simple and cheap! I have two. It is perfect for a small living space. I am really glad I did not get the adorable whale tub that I really wanted. It would take up too much space and would be a bigger hassle to travel with.
Baby Q-Tips : These are something I really did not think about. I got them as a gift in a bath set and I am so glad I did. You would be surprised just how gross a baby’s ear can get. As if clipping baby fingernails isn’t scary enough, try cleaning a flailing baby’s ear with a normal cotton swab.
Pacifier : The hospital sent us home with one (though, from our bill they had to have charged us $10 for it), but we like to have at least three around: one in the diaper bag, one in the living room, and one in his bassinet. Although he is currently on a bink strike, we are certainly glad we have them.
Car Seat : Obviously you can’t take your baby home from the hospital without one, but it is something we actually use and we are glad we invested into a safe, comfortable car seat. I probably read at least a dozen “Top 10 Car Seats of 2016” plus tons of product reviews before I landed on this seat, but I am glad I did. It’s great. Having the base is awesome for quickly securing the car seat
Breast Pump : Now, if you have insurance you should be covered for a breast pump (and if you don’t I literally have no idea how you intend to pay for medical care without being a millionaire). But even if you plan to stay at home, I would suggest getting one. This is the one I have and it is great. I pump around 8 oz of milk at least every other day and my baby is gaining tons of weight. This thing is a life saver.
Exercise Ball : This might be a surprise on the list. How in the world is an exercise ball a baby item? Well, technically it isn’t, but we do use it everyday for our little one. Our baby loves bouncing on this ball. I’d bet between my husband and myself we spend 2 hours a day bouncing and rocking on the ball. Plus, since we are still in an apartment an exercise ball is a great replacement for a rocking chair – it takes up less space, has multiple purposes, and can easily move from room to room. Its awesome.
One thing that we don’t have, but we wish we did is an automatic baby bouncer. I didn’t even know it was a thing until my mom got one for him to use at her house. It is seriously magical. He sits happily with us wherever we are and no one has to be doing any work. Glorious.
Good luck as you collect all the things you will need for your new bundle of joy. You’re going to do great!
